Bridges for Health is a global health organization dedicated to bringing healthcare resources, education, and compassionate service to communities in need. Our medical mission experiences allow healthcare professionals and students to serve alongside local healthcare providers while learning about global health, cultural humility, rural medicine, and healthcare challenges around the world. 

Bridges for Health focuses on creating a meaningful learning and service experience rather than simply providing short-term volunteer opportunities. Participants receive preparation, cultural training, medical education, and opportunities to work alongside local healthcare professionals and community partners. Although the “term” mission often has a religious affiliation, Bridges for Health is not affiliated with any religious organization.

No. While many participants are healthcare professionals for a medical focus, we welcome individuals who have a passion for service and are willing to learn. Non-clinical volunteers may assist with community outreach, education, logistics, and support activities.

No. Many participants join their first international medical mission with Bridges for Health. We provide preparation and guidance before departure, so participants feel confident and prepared.

Participants generally must be 18 years or older. Younger students may participate in special programs with additional requirements and supervision.

Nope! We will provide beginning medical Spanish training and you’ll get an immersive experience to learn basic phrases to communicate. You’ll finally make progress towards that goal of yours to learn Spanish! 

Depending on the location and community needs, participants may:

• Provide care in rural community clinics

No. Bridges for Health follows ethical global health practices. Volunteers provide care within their education, training, licensure, and the laws of the country where the mission occurs.

Participants work under appropriate local physicians and nurses and. You will collaborate with local healthcare providers and not need an active license. Bridges for Health does help with international placement volunteer service in Colombia for longer terms where you would need your license, but not during medical mission trips.

15. What is included in the mission cost?
Is airfare included?

Airfare is not included in the mission fee. Participants arrange their flights according to provided travel guidelines. 

Mission fees typically include:

• Lodging

• In-country transportation

• Educational training on tropical and indigenous medicine

• 30 FREE Nursing continuing education credits

Yes. Participants must have a valid passport according to international travel requirements.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended and may be required depending on the destination.

Bridges for Health carefully plans missions, evaluates destinations, partners with local contacts, and provides safety preparation before departure.

Participants should understand that international travel always carries some risk, and we provide education and guidance to help minimize those risks. We recommend all volunteers register themselves on the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. https://mytravel.state.gov/s/step

The team has emergency plans and local resources available. Participants are encouraged to carry personal medications, follow travel health recommendations, and notify team leaders of medical concerns.

Cost & Registration

Medical mission trip costs vary based on the location and duration of the 1–2-week trip. General costs are between $1995-$2595. Trips expenses and donations are tax deductible. The trip fee includes in-country transportation, translators, country coordinator, team leader, medications, at least 2 meal/day, lodging, training, and a team t-shirt. Additional expenses are immunizations if needed, Visa for some countries, spending money, and round-trip airfare. 

Yes. Payment options may be available to help participants prepare financially for their mission experience. 

Participants register through the Bridges for Health mission registration process by selecting their desired mission experience and completing required forms. 

Continuing Education Questions

Yes. Many Bridges for Health missions include 30 FREE nursing continuing education opportunities as part of the educational experience. Mental health counselors, OT, PT therapists are eligible for the CEs.
